My family had a Christmas tradition when I was a child, and it’s one that my husband and I have continued to this day. And seeing how it still surprises me how many people say ‘wow, that’s such a good idea’ when I tell them about it, I thought it was worth sharing here. I hope you enjoy it!
It’s very simple really – instead of everyone rushing downstairs to open all their presents first thing in the morning, you spread it out and take your time to actually enjoy the giving and opening of gifts throughout the day. It makes the Christmas magic last longer and I think encourages better appreciation of the gifts children receive, because they’re not rushing to rip open another parcel to see what else they’ve got.
You can either play it by ear and choose appropriate times as the day goes on, or have a system that randomises it for you! We used to have a snazzy ‘ho ho ho machine’ when I was a kid (techy parents!), but these days, you can download apps that give you random reminders throughout the day too; I’ve found Random Reminder on iOS and Randomly RemindMe on Android.
And that’s it really. It’s a really simple but effective way of making Christmas that little more special. I hope you enjoyed reading about it and I’d love to hear from you if you try it this Christmas!
